Visualizing Sub-Items in the Swimlane View
Parent Items in Swimlane View
In the Swimlane view, parent items can be easily identified by the small, clickable carat symbol in the top-right corner of the item. As with standalone items, parent items can be moved throughout the Swimlane view in order to adjust the dates and field values of that item.
As the dates on parent items are locked to a specific duration based on the child items, they will retain those durations when moved into a new time period and will adjust the dates accordingly based on the time period that they're moving into. For example, a parent item that starts on the 4th of July will adjust to start on the 1st of February given the difference of days in the month.
Child Items in Swimlane View
Child items are visible in the Swimlane view and can be displayed or hidden by selecting the small, clickable carat symbol in the top right corner of their respective parent items on the roadmap.
From the roadmap, users are able to click into the sub-items, update field & description values, view and add dependencies, and quickly navigate through the details of the parent or siblings in Sub-items section of the Item Card.
Sub-items & Buckets in Swimlane View
When working in the Swimlane view with items that have sub-items, users are also able to click and drag the parent items into a bucketed times (e.g. Soon, Future, etc.). All sub-items with dates will be assigned the specified bucket time that are moved into and any key dates or dependencies will be removed. Users will be prompted prior to making this change, in order to prevent the accidental removal of dates from their items and sub-items.
When items with sub-items are moved out of the buckets and back into static dates, the parent item is automatically assigned the full number of dates for that time period and the child items retain the bucket time value they were previously using. Original sub-item durations, key dates, and dependencies will not restore when an item is moved back into a standard time period.
Visualizing Sub-Items in the Timeline View
Parent Items in Timeline View
In the Timeline view, parent items can be easily located by looking for the Sub-item symbol prefixing the label on the item. As with standalone items, your parent items can be moved throughout the Timeline view - allowing you to create new streams, adjust item dates, and re-assign field values all by clicking and dragging the item to your desired location.
As the dates on parent items are locked to a specific duration based on their child items, you will not have the same controls to adjust the duration of parent items that you would on any other item.
Child Items in Timeline View
While child items are not directly visible on the timeline itself, they can be easily viewed by hovering over their respective parent items on the timeline.
In the tooltip that appears when you hover over the parent item, users can easily click into the listed sub-items in order to update field & description values, view & add dependencies, and quickly navigate through the parent item or other siblings using the Sub-items section of the Item Card.
